About Compress To KB

A free, private, and powerful image compression tool that runs entirely in your browser.

Compress To KB was built with a simple mission: to provide fast, free, and genuinely private image compression for everyone. Unlike most online image tools, we do not upload your images to a server. All compression happens directly in your web browser using JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas API.

Why We Built This Tool

Most image compression services require you to upload your files to a remote server. This creates privacy risks, especially when working with sensitive photos, confidential documents, or proprietary images. We believe your data should stay on your device. By building a fully client-side compression engine, we eliminate the need for uploads entirely.

How It Works

When you drop an image into our tool, it is loaded into your browser's memory using the FileReader API. The image is then drawn onto an HTML canvas, where we can read pixel data and re-encode it at different quality levels. Our intelligent binary search algorithm tests multiple quality settings to find the best balance between file size and visual fidelity for your chosen target.

If quality adjustment alone cannot reach your target size, the tool intelligently scales down the image dimensions. Because file size scales roughly with the square of image dimensions, even a modest reduction in width and height can significantly reduce file size while preserving more quality than simply compressing harder.

Supported Formats

We support JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF output. GIF and BMP files can be read and converted to these formats. Our tool automatically detects the best output format for your image type. Photographs are typically converted to WebP for superior compression, while images with transparency are preserved in PNG or WebP as appropriate. If your browser supports AVIF, we may use it for very small target sizes where its compression advantages are most pronounced.

Our Commitment to Privacy

Privacy is not a feature we added later. It is the foundation of how this tool was designed. No image data is ever sent over the network. No analytics capture your images. No third-party compression APIs are used. Your files remain on your device from start to finish.

Open Web Standards

Compress To KB is built entirely on open web standards: HTML5, CSS3, and vanilla JavaScript. We do not rely on heavy frameworks, external libraries, or proprietary technologies. This keeps the tool lightweight, fast, and compatible with all modern browsers.

Behind the Project

Compress To KB was built by a passionate web developer who believes that online tools should respect user privacy. Frustrated by image compression services that upload photos to remote servers, this tool was designed from the ground up to run entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API.

The goal is simple: give users a fast, reliable, and completely private way to compress images for government job applications, exam forms, document uploads, and web optimization, without ever worrying about data leaks or server storage.

"Your images are yours. They should never leave your device just to be resized."
