The most common photo format. Excellent compression for photographs with rich colors. Our tool optimizes quality settings to reach your target size while preserving visual fidelity.
Lossless format with full transparency support. Ideal for screenshots, graphics, logos, and images with text. We preserve transparency when compressing PNG files automatically.
Modern format from Google offering superior compression. WebP typically produces files 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. We auto-convert when your browser supports it.
The next-generation format with the best compression ratios. AVIF can reduce file sizes by 50% compared to JPEG. Automatically used for very small target sizes when your browser supports it.
Unlike most online image compressors, we never upload your images to a server. All compression happens locally in your browser.
Every image you compress using Compress To KB is processed entirely within your web browser using JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas API. This means your images are never sent over the internet, never stored on any remote server, and cannot be accessed by us or any third party. Compressed images exist only in your browser's memory and are discarded when you close the page.
This makes Compress To KB ideal for compressing sensitive photos, confidential documents, or any image you prefer to keep private. Your data stays on your device, exactly where it belongs. Once the page is loaded, you can even compress images without an internet connection.

It depends entirely on the exam. SSC and IBPS typically cap photographs at 50KB and signatures at 20KB. UPSC, NEET, and JEE Main allow photographs up to 200KB. The new Indian passport standard allows up to 250KB. Check the table above or your exam's official notification for the exact number, then open that specific tool page — each one is pre-set to the right target.
Yes, and fairly often. NTA, for instance, has changed the JEE Main photograph ceiling between 200KB and 300KB across different cycles, and India's passport photo standard changed significantly in late 2025. This site's tables reflect our research at the time of writing — always cross-check with the current official notification before submitting any form.
No. Compress To KB is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any government body, exam authority, or portal mentioned on this site. All exam and portal names are referenced solely to help you choose the correct compression target.
Because compression happens entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API, there's no server in the loop at all — which matters a lot when the image is a personal photo, ID document, or signature. Read our full Privacy Policy for the technical details.
Yes, Compress To KB is completely free with no sign-up, no account, and no watermark on your downloaded image. There are no hidden limits on how many times you can use it.
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, or BMP files. For output, choose Auto to let the tool pick the best format for your target size, or force a specific format — JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF — from the Output Format dropdown.
Not currently — each tool page processes one image at a time so it can fully dedicate its compression search to that single file. You can immediately reset and run another image right after downloading, with no limit on repeat uses.
Not directly. Our supported input formats are JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, and BMP, which doesn't include Apple's HEIC format. Many iPhones convert HEIC to JPG automatically during a browser upload; if yours doesn't, switch to Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" to save new photos as JPG.
Yes. Every tool on this site is built to work the same way on a phone's browser as on desktop — tap to browse your photo library or take a new picture, then compress and download directly to your device, with no app to install.
We use 1KB = 1,024 bytes, the standard binary definition used by Windows, macOS, and most software. A small number of older web portals define 1KB as exactly 1,000 bytes instead; either way, our tool's result will comfortably satisfy both definitions since it targets the number you select with some margin.
When set to Auto, the tool checks whether your image has transparency, what your browser supports, and how small your target size is, then picks whichever format (JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF) is most likely to hit your target with the best visual quality. You can override this any time by selecting a specific format from the dropdown instead.
